Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves

Long ago, in a busy city in ancient Persia, there lived two brothers named Cassim and Ali Baba. Though they had grown up together, their lives became very different after they married.

Cassim married a wealthy woman and became a rich merchant with a grand house, fine clothes, and many servants. He cared deeply about money and pride. Ali Baba, however, married a poor woman and earned his living by cutting firewood in the forest and selling it in the market. Though poor, Ali Baba was kind, honest, and hardworking.

Every morning, Ali Baba took his three donkeys into the forest to gather wood. One hot afternoon, while tying bundles of sticks, he suddenly heard the sound of horses approaching. Alarmed, he quickly climbed into a tree and hid among the branches.

Soon, forty horsemen dressed in black cloaks rode into a clearing nearby. Each carried swords and heavy bags filled with treasure. Their leader was tall and fierce, with sharp eyes and a thick beard.

Ali Baba realized at once that these men were robbers.

The leader dismounted and walked toward a huge rock hidden behind bushes. Raising his hands, he shouted, “Open Sesame!”

To Ali Baba’s amazement, the great rock slowly split apart, revealing the entrance to a secret cave. One by one, the thieves carried their bags inside. After some time, they returned empty-handed.

Then the leader cried, “Close Sesame!”

The rock sealed shut again without a trace of a doorway. Moments later, the thieves mounted their horses and disappeared into the forest.

Ali Baba remained hidden until all was silent. His heart pounded with excitement and fear. Finally, curiosity overcame him. He climbed down carefully and approached the rock.

Taking a deep breath, he repeated the words he had heard.

“Open Sesame!”

At once, the rock moved aside.

Ali Baba stepped into the cave and gasped in wonder. The cavern glittered with mountains of treasure—gold coins, jewels, silver plates, silk carpets, and precious gems stolen over many years. Riches filled every corner.

Though amazed, Ali Baba did not become greedy. He loaded only a few bags of gold onto his donkeys and covered them with firewood before returning home.

When Ali Baba showed the gold to his wife, she could hardly believe her eyes. Together they counted the coins happily. Wanting to measure the treasure, Ali Baba’s wife borrowed a measuring scale from Cassim’s household.

But Cassim’s suspicious wife secretly spread wax beneath the scale. When the scale was returned, a gold coin remained stuck to the bottom.

Cassim became furious with curiosity.

“Where did poor Ali Baba get gold coins?” he demanded.

At first Ali Baba tried to keep the secret, but Cassim threatened him until he finally revealed the cave and the magical words.

The next morning, Cassim hurried greedily into the forest with several mules. He found the rock and shouted, “Open Sesame!”

The cave opened, and Cassim rushed inside eagerly. Seeing the treasure, his eyes shone with greed. He filled sack after sack with gold and jewels.

But when he tried to leave, panic seized him. He had forgotten the magical words.

“Open Wheat!” he cried.

Nothing happened.

“Open Barley! Open Rice!”

The stone did not move.

Before long, the forty thieves returned. They found Cassim trapped inside the cave among the stolen treasure. Furious that someone had discovered their secret, they killed him without mercy.

When Cassim did not return home, his frightened wife begged Ali Baba to search for him. Ali Baba feared the worst and rode into the forest.

At the cave, he whispered, “Open Sesame,” and entered quietly. There he discovered his brother’s lifeless body.

Filled with sorrow, Ali Baba carried Cassim home secretly. He knew the thieves must never suspect another person knew their secret.

Ali Baba sought help from a clever servant girl named Morgiana. She was wise, brave, and quick-thinking. Morgiana helped arrange Cassim’s burial without revealing the truth. She even persuaded a tailor to sew the body together while blindfolded so no one would learn what had happened.

Meanwhile, the thieves realized someone else knew about the cave because Cassim’s body had disappeared.

Their leader swore revenge.

Disguised as merchants, the thieves entered the city searching for Ali Baba’s house. One thief secretly marked the door with chalk so the others could find it later. But Morgiana noticed the strange mark. Suspecting danger, she cleverly marked many other doors in the neighborhood the same way.

When the thieves returned that night, they could not identify the correct house. Furious, their leader killed the thief responsible for the mistake.

Another thief tried again the next day with a different mark. Morgiana once more copied it onto nearby houses, confusing the thieves again.

At last, the leader himself carefully found Ali Baba’s home and memorized its location.

Soon afterward, he arrived disguised as an oil merchant leading nineteen mules carrying large jars of oil. In truth, thirty-eight thieves hid inside the jars, while one jar contained real oil.

Ali Baba welcomed the merchant warmly, offering him food and shelter for the night.

Later, Morgiana went to fetch oil for cooking and discovered armed men hiding inside the jars. One whispered, “Is it time yet?”

Realizing the danger instantly, Morgiana remained calm. “Not yet,” she replied softly.

Then she heated a large pot of oil until it boiled fiercely and poured it into each jar, stopping the hidden thieves before they could attack.

Only the leader escaped by climbing over a wall into the darkness.

The next morning, Ali Baba learned how Morgiana had saved everyone in the house. He praised her courage and wisdom greatly.

But the thief leader still sought revenge.

Some months later, disguised as a wealthy merchant, he befriended Ali Baba’s son and was invited to a feast at Ali Baba’s home. Morgiana, however, recognized the man despite his disguise.

During the celebration, she performed a graceful dance before the guests. Suddenly, she drew a dagger and struck the thief leader before he could attack Ali Baba.

At first Ali Baba was shocked, but Morgiana quickly explained the truth. Hidden beneath the man’s robe were weapons meant for murder.

Ali Baba realized she had saved his life once again.

In gratitude, Ali Baba rewarded Morgiana generously and treated her like a member of the family. Later, she married Ali Baba’s son, and peace finally returned to the household.

As for the secret cave, Ali Baba used its treasure wisely and honestly. He never became cruel or greedy like the thieves or his brother Cassim. Instead, he lived comfortably, helping his family and remembering always that wisdom, kindness, and courage are worth far more than gold.
