The Clever RabbitIn a vast green forest filled with tall trees, sparkling streams, and colorful flowers, many animals lived together peacefully. Deer grazed in the meadows, monkeys swung from branch to branch, and rabbits hopped freely through the bushes. For many years the forest was a happy place where every creature lived without fear.
But one summer, everything changed.
A huge lion came to live in a dark cave near the center of the forest. He was strong, fierce, and terribly hungry. Every day he hunted more animals than he needed. Sometimes he killed deer, wild goats, rabbits, and even birds all in one day. Soon the forest echoed not with joyful sounds, but with cries of fear.
The animals became desperate.
“If this continues,” said an old deer, “none of us will survive.”
“We must do something,” cried the monkeys.
At last, the wisest animals gathered beneath a giant banyan tree to discuss a solution. After many hours, an old tortoise spoke slowly.
“The lion kills so many animals because he hunts constantly. Perhaps we can make an agreement with him. If we send him one animal each day, he will no longer hunt the rest of us.”
Though frightened, the animals agreed. It was a terrible plan, but better than losing many lives every day.
The next morning they approached the lion’s cave trembling with fear. The lion roared angrily when he saw them.
“Why have you come here?” he thundered.
The old fox bowed respectfully. “Your Majesty, we know you are the king of this forest. Hunting every day must tire you greatly. We have come to offer a solution. Each day, one animal will come willingly to your cave as your meal. In return, you must promise not to hunt any other animals.”
The lion thought for a moment. He liked the idea of food arriving without effort.
“Very well,” he growled. “But if even one day passes without my meal, I shall hunt every creature in this forest.”
The animals hurried away, relieved but still sorrowful.
From that day onward, one unlucky animal was chosen daily and sent to the lion. Some days it was a deer, other days a goat or rabbit. Fear spread throughout the forest as everyone waited for their turn.
One morning, the lot fell upon a small rabbit.
The rabbits wept sadly when they heard the news.
“You are too tiny,” cried one rabbit. “The lion will devour you in a single bite.”
But the little rabbit remained calm. Though small, he was clever and quick-thinking.
“If I must go,” he said, “perhaps I can save the forest.”
As he slowly hopped toward the lion’s cave, he began thinking carefully. He knew he could never fight the lion with strength. Only intelligence could defeat such a powerful enemy.
Along the way, he noticed an old stone well hidden among the trees. Curious, he peered inside and saw his reflection in the water below.
Suddenly an idea flashed into his mind.
The rabbit smiled.
Instead of rushing to the cave, he deliberately delayed his journey until the sun was high in the sky.
Meanwhile, the lion paced furiously outside his cave.
“Where is my meal?” he roared. “How dare they keep me waiting!”
At last the little rabbit appeared, hopping slowly toward him.
The lion’s eyes blazed with anger.
“You tiny creature!” he thundered. “Not only are you too small to satisfy my hunger, but you arrive late as well! I should destroy the entire forest for this insult!”
The rabbit bowed low, pretending to tremble.
“Your Majesty, please forgive me. It is not my fault.”
“Then whose fault is it?” roared the lion.
The rabbit spoke carefully. “This morning, five rabbits were sent to you as your meal. But on the way here, another lion attacked us.”
The lion froze.
“Another lion?” he growled fiercely.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” said the rabbit. “He claimed that he was the true king of the forest. He captured the other rabbits and declared that you were weak and cowardly.”
The lion roared so loudly that birds flew from the trees in fright.
“No lion is greater than I!” he bellowed. “Take me to this impostor immediately!”
The rabbit hid his smile and nodded.
“As you command, Your Majesty.”
The clever rabbit led the furious lion deep into the forest until they reached the old stone well.
“The other lion lives down there,” whispered the rabbit nervously. “He became angry when I said you were the true king.”
The lion marched toward the well and peered inside.
There, reflected in the water, he saw another lion staring back at him.
The lion roared angrily.
The reflection roared back.
Blinded by rage, the lion believed another beast truly stood below him.
“How dare you challenge me!” he shouted.
Again the reflection shouted back.
Unable to control his fury, the lion leaped straight into the well to attack his enemy.
There was a huge splash.
The rabbit quickly stepped back as the water churned wildly. The lion struggled and roared, but the walls of the deep well were too steep. At last the mighty lion disappeared beneath the water.
Silence filled the forest.
The rabbit waited carefully to make sure the lion was gone. Then he raced back through the trees as fast as his little legs could carry him.
When the animals saw him returning alive, they stared in amazement.
“The rabbit has returned!”
“Did the lion spare you?”
The clever rabbit climbed onto a rock and told them everything that had happened. At first the animals could hardly believe it.
“You defeated the lion?” gasped the deer.
“With only your wits?” cried the monkeys.
The rabbit nodded modestly.
“The lion was powerful,” he said, “but anger and pride blinded him.”
Soon the entire forest burst into celebration. Birds sang loudly, elephants trumpeted with joy, and the rabbits danced happily beneath the trees. For the first time in many months, the animals no longer lived in fear.
The old tortoise smiled wisely.
“Today we have learned an important lesson,” he said. “Strength alone does not make one truly powerful. Intelligence, patience, and courage are often greater than claws and teeth.”
From that day onward, the little rabbit became a hero throughout the forest. Though he was small in size, everyone remembered that his clever mind had saved them all.
And so the forest became peaceful once again, filled with laughter, friendship, and the joyful sounds of animals living freely under the bright green trees.
