Long ago in the countryside of Germany, there lived a hardworking donkey who spent many years carrying heavy sacks of grain for his master. Day after day, he traveled dusty roads and steep hills without complaint. But as time passed, the donkey grew old and weak. His steps slowed, and he could no longer work as quickly as before.
One evening, while resting near the barn, he overheard his master speaking harshly.
“This old donkey is useless now,” the man said. “Soon I’ll sell him.”
The donkey’s heart sank with fear. He did not want to spend the rest of his days treated badly or abandoned. So before sunrise the next morning, he quietly slipped away from the farm and started walking down the road.
As he traveled, he tried to think of what he could do next.
“I may not be strong anymore,” he said to himself, “but I still have a loud voice. Perhaps I can become a musician in the town of Bremen.”
Feeling hopeful, the donkey continued on his journey.
After several miles, he came across an old hunting dog lying sadly beside the road. The dog looked tired and thin, breathing heavily after years of chasing game.
“Why are you so unhappy, friend?” asked the donkey kindly.
The dog sighed deeply. “I have grown too old to hunt. My master says I am no longer useful. I fear he may send me away.”
The donkey nodded with understanding.
“I know exactly how you feel,” he replied. “I am on my way to Bremen to become a musician. Why don’t you come with me? You can play the drum with your strong bark.”
The dog’s eyes brightened.
“A musician?” he said excitedly. “That sounds far better than waiting sadly for my fate.”
So the dog joined the donkey, and together they walked toward Bremen.
Not long afterward, the two travelers heard miserable crying from a nearby fence. Sitting there was a cat with dusty fur and drooping whiskers.
“What troubles you?” asked the dog.
The cat flicked her tail sadly. “I am old now, and I can no longer catch mice the way I once did. My mistress says I only sleep and eat. She plans to get rid of me.”
“That is terrible,” said the donkey. “Come with us to Bremen! Your voice would make a fine addition to our music.”
The cat purred thoughtfully. “I do still sing beautifully at night,” she admitted.
“Exactly!” barked the dog.
The cat smiled for the first time in many days and joined the group.
The three companions continued along the winding road. As evening approached, they passed a farmhouse where a rooster sat on the gate crowing loudly and sadly.
“Why are you shouting so much?” asked the cat.
The rooster flapped his wings anxiously. “Tomorrow guests are arriving for dinner, and my owner plans to cook me for the meal! I am trying to enjoy my final evening while I still can.”
“You should not stay here another moment,” said the donkey firmly. “Come with us to Bremen and become a musician. Your crowing is loud enough to wake the entire world!”
The rooster liked the idea immediately.
“Yes!” he cried. “Anything is better than becoming soup!”
So the rooster flew down from the gate and joined the strange little band.
Now the four animals traveled together happily. Though none of them had much money or strength left, they enjoyed each other’s company and dreamed of a better future in Bremen.
However, Bremen was still far away, and night soon fell across the forest. Since it was too dark to continue safely, the animals searched for a place to rest.
As they wandered among the trees, the rooster suddenly spotted a light glowing in the distance.
“I see a house over there!” he crowed.
The animals carefully approached and peered through the window. Inside sat a group of robbers around a table piled high with food, bread, roasted meat, and sparkling drinks.
The donkey’s stomach growled loudly.
“We haven’t eaten all day,” said the dog hungrily.
“But those robbers look dangerous,” whispered the cat.
The donkey thought for a moment. Then his eyes lit up with an idea.
“We may not be young,” he said, “but together we can still frighten them.”
The others leaned closer as he explained his plan.
The donkey stood with his front legs against the window ledge. The dog climbed onto the donkey’s back, the cat climbed onto the dog, and finally the rooster perched on top of the cat’s head.
“Ready?” whispered the donkey.
The others nodded nervously.
Then, all at once, they began making music as loudly as possible.
The donkey brayed,
the dog barked,
the cat screeched,
and the rooster crowed wildly.
At the same moment, they crashed through the window in a tangle of fur, feathers, and flying glass.
The robbers were terrified.
“Ghosts!” one robber screamed.
“Monsters from the forest!” shouted another.
Panic spread through the room. The robbers abandoned their feast and fled into the dark woods as fast as they could.
The four animals stared at one another in surprise.
“It worked!” barked the dog happily.
Soon they sat around the table enjoying the delicious feast. Never in their lives had they eaten so well.
After dinner, they explored the cozy house. The donkey rested near the fireplace, the dog stretched beside the door, the cat curled up near the warm ashes, and the rooster flew onto a roof beam above them.
Meanwhile, the robbers hid deep in the forest. After some time, their leader decided the house might no longer be dangerous.
“Go back and investigate,” he ordered one robber.
The nervous robber crept quietly toward the house and stepped inside. Everything seemed peaceful and dark.
But when he tried to light a candle near the fireplace, the cat scratched his face with sharp claws. The frightened man stumbled backward, where the dog bit his leg. As he rushed toward the door, the donkey kicked him powerfully, and the rooster crowed loudly from above.
“Catch the thief!” the rooster cried.
The robber ran back into the forest screaming in terror.
“There truly are terrible monsters in that house!” he gasped to the others. “One scratched me with knives, another bit me, a giant creature hit me with a club, and a judge shouted from the roof!”
The robbers never returned.
As for the donkey, dog, cat, and rooster, they decided they no longer needed to travel to Bremen after all. They had found a warm home, plenty of food, and loyal friendship.
And so the four old animals lived together happily for the rest of their days, proving that courage, teamwork, and friendship can create a new beginning at any age.
