The Lantern Hanging From the Cedar Tree

The Lantern Hanging From the Cedar Tree

By the time the rain stopped, the mountain trail had almost disappeared beneath a blanket of fog.

Six friends stood beside their parked SUV at the edge of Cedar Ridge Forest, adjusting backpacks and checking their gear before beginning the three-mile hike to their reserved campsite.

“This weather is perfect,” Daniel said, tightening the straps on his pack.

“For getting lost,” Olivia replied with a laugh.

Their destination was an isolated campground overlooking an old valley that locals simply called Lantern Hollow. It was one of the least-visited campsites in the region, mostly because reaching it required a long hike through dense cedar trees with very few trail markers.

The ranger at the visitor center had smiled while handing them the map.

“If you see a lantern hanging from one of the cedar trees after dark,” he said casually, “don’t follow it.”

Everyone laughed, assuming it was just another local ghost story designed to entertain tourists.

Daniel even joked, “If it leads to a shortcut back to the parking lot, I’m following it.”

The ranger didn’t laugh.

The hike took longer than expected.

Mist drifted between the trees, making the forest unusually quiet. By late afternoon they reached a clearing beside a small creek where their campsite overlooked the valley below.

It was beautiful.

Towering cedars surrounded the campsite, and beyond them stretched miles of untouched wilderness.

After pitching their tents, the group gathered around a campfire while Olivia prepared dinner.

As darkness settled over the forest, conversation turned to the ranger’s warning.

Emma smiled.

“So… who’s hoping to see the mysterious lantern tonight?”

Daniel raised his hand.

“I still think it’s someone’s campsite.”

“No one camps beyond this valley,” Marcus said, pointing toward the map.

“The trail ends here.”

The fire burned low as stars slowly appeared overhead.

By midnight everyone except Daniel had gone to bed.

He sat quietly watching sparks disappear into the darkness.

Then he noticed it.

A warm golden light.

High above the ground.

Hanging from a cedar tree nearly a hundred yards beyond the campsite.

At first he assumed another camper had hung a lantern from a branch.

But there wasn’t another campsite in that direction.

The lantern swayed gently despite the still air.

Its soft glow never flickered.

Daniel stared for several seconds.

Then the lantern moved.

Not quickly.

Just enough to make it seem as though someone carrying it had taken a single step deeper into the forest.

He blinked.

The light stopped.

Another step.

Then another.

Almost inviting him to follow.

“Daniel?”

Olivia stepped from her tent.

“What are you looking at?”

He pointed toward the trees.

“That.”

She followed his gaze.

The lantern still hung among the cedars.

“I thought the ranger was joking,” she whispered.

“So did I.”

Neither of them moved.

For several minutes they simply watched the glowing lantern sway silently above the forest floor.

Then, without warning…

It disappeared.

Not like a candle being blown out.

It simply wasn’t there anymore.

The darkness swallowed it completely.

Neither of them slept much that night.

The following morning Daniel searched the area where the lantern had appeared.

There were no footprints.

No rope.

No branches strong enough to support a hanging lantern.

Nothing.

Marcus laughed.

“Maybe you dreamed it.”

Daniel was certain he hadn’t.

Olivia had seen it too.

Still, the group spent the day hiking nearby waterfalls and photographing wildlife.

By sunset the strange encounter had almost become another camping story to laugh about.

Until night returned.

Just after eleven o’clock…

The lantern appeared again.

This time it hung from a different cedar tree.

Closer to camp.

And beneath its golden glow…

Someone was standing perfectly still.
